In the s and s, Ebony highlighted the work of Black historians and intellectuals like Leo Hansberry and John Henrik Clarke , who argued for the central place of African learning and cultural expression in shaping the intellectual legacy of the West, from the pre-classical period to modernity. The Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization. In his historiographic essay, Harding singled out Ebony for its crucial role in popularizing and passing down the work of Black historians, intellectual work that carried important political implications.
Rather, the growth of Black history came from a grassroots desire for a usable past. To be sure, Harding credited the students involved in the Civil Rights struggle, as well as the professoriate at historically black colleges and universities, for the rise of new Black history.

College freshmen are not tabulae rasae — they do bring ideas with them into the university, including ideas about history, ideas about a usable past.
Ebony magazine pays its freelancers, the company that owns the African-American lifestyle publication said, but recently some have slipped through the cracks. The iconic magazine, which began in Chicago, came under fire this week from contributing writers who say they've gone months without pay. Michael Gibson, chairman of Ebony Media and co-founder and chairman of CVG Group — the Austin, Texas-based private equity firm that bought the magazine last year — said a lag was created in payment to some freelancers when his firm purchased the magazine.
It took CVG about four months to buy Ebony, he said. Transactions like that typically take six to nine months, enough time to bring in a consultant and assess practices in the company, like payment to freelancers. In Ebony's case, the consultant was brought in after the purchase, and somehow the company missed payments to some freelancers.
Gibson declined to comment on how much Ebony owes to freelancers or how many writers didn't receive payment. The company is working on revamping its freelancing budget, he said.
